Two millennia ago it was clad in marble and held upwards of 50,000 spectators watching unspeakable acts of violence. Even though those heady days are long gone, the Colosseum still takes the breath away. Nearby, more ruins of ancient Rome beguile visitors; the Roman Forum, the Arch of Constantine, the Pantheon and the baths of the Terme di Caracalla, to name just a few.
Not far away, the hill of the Campidoglio showcases a stunning piazza and palace designed by Michelangelo. Other renaissance highlights include Galleria Borghese, set in the beautiful greenery of the Villa Borghese, home to fine works by the likes of Bernini, Raphael and Titian; the Palazzo Barberini and, of course, the Vatican City featuring St Peter's Basilica, the most famous and important church in the world. Oh, and don't forget to throw some coins into the Trevi Fountain as tradition has it you must do if you are to re-visit this wonderful city.
