Introduction
Germany's
financial capital has a lot more going for it than deal making and high-powered
lunches, though it has those in abundance. Its history is particularly
rich, taking in ancient Rome, the Holy Roman Empire and Johann Goethe,
one of the world's most famous poets. Running through the city is the
River Main, at once a busy waterway and attractive counterpoint to both
Frankfurt's gleaming new architecture and it's picturesque medieval Old
Town.

Sights
Frankfurt is so associated with modern finance that it might come as a
surprise to learn that it has been a business centre for hundreds of years,
a fact confirmed by a trip to the visitors gallery of the city's Bourse,
founded in 1558, and still at the heart of money matters. If high finance
is the nerve centre of contemporary Frankfurt, high literature, in the
form of Johann Wolfgang Goethe, represents its soul. The Goethehaus
and Goethemuseum were studiously rebuilt after Second World War
bombing and feature art and furniture owned by the poet. Visual art is
well catered for in the form of three major exhibition spaces; the Museum
fur Moderne Kunst, an eye-catching triangular structure with an especially
strong pop art section; Stadelsches Kunstinstitut und Galarie,
which features German Expressionist works as well as the likes of Vermeer,
Rembrandt and Renoir and Karmeliterkloster, a monastery turned museum
and gallery that displays temporary modern art collections. Art apart,
Frankfurt serves up a feast for the eyes in its architecture, a startling
mix of mega-office blocks and medieval quarters that makes for fascinating
viewing. Sachsenhausen, on the south bank of the River Main, boasts
Charlemagne as its founder and attracts visitors keen to see its well-preserved
winding streets and alleyways. Also replete with history is Romerberg,
a popular square overlooked by a stunning Gothic town hall and a 13th
century church.
Shopping
Central Frankfurt, including Sachsenhausen, is littered with shops, both
ordinary and tourist, but the main event for those in serious need of
off-loading their Marks is without a doubt Zeil, a pedestrianised area
which is Germany's busiest shopping street. Elsewhere Fressgrasse's (Gobbler's
Alley) delicatessens offer tremendous choice in fine foods, German and
international.
Nightlife
Two areas stand out for visitors keen to slate hunger and thirst in German
fashion. The Sachsenhausen old quarter is famous for its Ebbelwoi
(cider pubs) which feature a traditional menu as well as potent ciders,
while Fressgasse is the home of more varied eateries. There are innumerable
bars in town, from trendy minimalist affairs to Bierkellers, while Frankfurt
is also home to plenty of nightclubs, often with a house music music policy.
Hotels
Hotels range from the sumptuous elegance of the Frankfurter Hof, through
chain establishments catering mainly to the business traveller to the
friendly family-run inns found in Sachsenhausen. Given the city's business
status many fill their rooms quickly so an early booking is advised.
