Frankfurt

Fickle Frankfurt
Helena Thompson pins down Germany's financial capital

THeading down to the 'Dorian Gray' upon arriving in Frankfurt, I discovered that what sounded like a tribute to Oscar Wilde actually sounded more like techno. Not that the heady mix of art buffs, money makers and keen clubbers on the dance floor seemed to mind. Still jetlagged, I was happy to stick around too - despite being tempted by the Jahrhundert club that throbs until the early hours with international DJs.

There's a multicultural vibe to Frankfurt that matches the cuisine on offer (the delicatessens in 'Gobbler's Alley' live up to their location with a tasty selection of foods from around the world). The Brotfabrik club features live international music as well as DJ nights, and an eclectic mix of pop and rock stars pack out the Waldstadion in the city park as well as the Festhalle on the trade fair site. What's more, there's more to many music haunts than meets the eye - the first building I come to venturing down Düsseldorfer Strasse hosts not only live sets and dance music but theatre performances and art exhibitions.

Architecturally the city is equally full of surprises. Karmeliterkloster is a monastery turned museum and gallery that displays temporary modern art collections, while a converted chapel on Heiligkreuzgasse hosts variety shows featuring magicians and circus performers. For all its sky scraping office blocks, Frankfurt preserves its history with a gothic town hall and a 13th century church that boast the influence of ancient Rome, and the Goethehaus and Goethemuseum featuring art and furniture owned by the city's resident poet were studiously rebuilt after Second World War bombing. Frankfurt saves you from the fate of Goethe's Faust, offering worldly pleasures past and present without demanding your soul.

Hotel Notes:
We feature the Steigenberger Frankfurter Hof. Grandeur, elegance and scrupulous attention to detail are the hallmarks of the Frankfurter Hof, one of the city's oldest, best appointed and most conveniently located hotels. For details of this hotel and more info on the city see:
