Peter D. Clee explores the cobbled streets
OUR CAR broke down recently while en route to a wedding in Germany. Aside from all the bureaucratic scramblings arranging a tow-truck to take us all back home there was one shining light. We had the good fortune to break down near the medieval city of Brugge (Bruges); a small Belgian (well, Flemish) city replete with fine squares, tall towers and winding canals.
So we rolled into a charming little hotel and begged them for a room. It was late, it was a public holiday weekend, but luckily they had just the one room left. We grabbed it and were not disappointed. In our exasperated state this was just the haven of peace and old-world tranquillity our minds and bodies had craved.
Our emotional rescue was far from over though. Once we had freshened up we took a wander through the citys cobbled streets ending up in a local restaurant. Those of you who know Belgium, will know one of Europes best kept secrets; the food here is out of this world. Moules Frites is a supreme local delicacy. Wash it down with some French wine or a cool glass of Belgian beer.
Those with more time on their hands and without broken down jalopies to worry about will find plenty to do on a short break to Brugge. Aside from the beautiful buildings, there is Flemish art a-plenty in the city's various museums and galleries or take a canal tour along the many waterways. For a real treat, splash out on a horse-drawn carriage ride through the labyrinth of medieval streets and squares.
So, a fine city and just over 4 hours away by car (and tunnel) from London. Yes, Brugge is certainly high up on my list of places to re-visit.
