Introduction
One thousand years ago
Bishop -later Saint- Gellert was put to death by a gang of anti-Christians
who pushed him down the hill that now bears his name. They may have been
a bloodthirsty lot, but the pagans had a sure sense of place as the hill
is one of the most beautiful landmarks in a generally beautiful city.
At its foot stands Hotel Gellert, an Art Nouveau extravaganza that boasts
a wide variety of room style, a dizzying array of thermal treatments and
swimming pools and some of the best up-market Hungarian cuisine in town.
Location
On the Danube, at the
bottom of Gellert Hill, the hotel is within half a mile (one kilometre)
of the famous Royal Palace and the other sights of Castle Hill on the
Buda side of the city, while across the river the more varied delights
of Pest are also mostly within walking distance.
Bedrooms
With many of its rooms
facing the Danube, the Gellert is a top choice for visitors who hanker
after a fine Budapest view. Other rooms face the woods of Gellert Hill,
while some overlook the enormous outdoor swimming pool and its wave machine
or a peaceful courtyard. Rooms vary in standard. Almost half are singles
with either en-suite shower or bath, some are comfortable doubles, while
the most luxurious are either classed as refurbished doubles or suites.
Larger rooms almost all have air-con and mini-bar.
Restaurants
International haute cuisine and Hungarian specialities are served up at
the Duna restaurant. The relaxed brasserie also goes for a local/international
mix, though with lighter meals. Meanwhile, there's a stunning, high-ceilinged
lobby bar plus a coffee-shop and confectionery for those unable to resist
the temptation of those gorgeous Hungarian cakes.
Business Facilities
Six conference rooms of various size make up the meeting space at the
Gellert. Three of them can by joined to make a 500 plus hall for the larger
event. A business centre offers secretarial and translation services plus
computers, faxes, modems and photocopying.
