Hotels
Our choice of Bern's best character hotels.

Bern CityClustered in the Old Town, hotels in Bern make pedestrian tourism simple. Many are filled with authentic Art Nouveau paintings and age-old feel while still retaining a sleek elegance. The genteel atmosphere of the Schweizerhof gives the impression of luxury but without losing sight of historic charm.

Hotel Bern ****
City Centre, Bern

Once the home of a theatre, the Hotel Bern retains a sense of the dramatic in its neo-classical architecture and in its well-rehearsed levels of service. Combine all that with a fantastic location and two widely recommended restaurants and you get one of the top hotels of its class in town... (more)

Schweizerhof Bern *****
Bahnhofplatz, Bern

This centrally located and elegant five star hotel has been in the Gauer family for generations. A sense of history pervades the Schweizerhof as much as it does the city on its doorstep... (more)

Essential Bern
Quick guide to Switzerland's capital.

Introduction
BarengiabenSwitzerland's capital is unlike its neighbouring cities - you won't find any cosmopolitan hullabaloo here. Less glamorous than, say. Geneva, the medieval streets of Bern have a much more local feel. Casual-dressed politicians hang out cafe's - even the President has been noted to take the tram to work.

Top Sights
1. Bundeshaus (Houses Of Parliament) - Domed-shapedBundeshaus building home to the Swiss National Council. Regular tours offer an insight into the parliamentary chambers.
2. Historisches Museum (Historical Museum) - 15th century Flemish tapestries, Bernese sculptures and 15th and 16th century stained glass windows are just some of the delights in this spread-out austere structure.
3. Kunsthalle (Art Gallery) - A haven for contemporary art enthusiasts, this early 20th century gallery displays work from promising up and coming artists including a healthy quotient of local artists.
4. Kunstmuseum (Art Museum) - Another groundbreaking museum which hosts a magnificent array of work from both old masters and impressionists as well as frequently changing contemporary exhibitions.
5. Munster (Cathedral) - Ansicht DacherLandmark cathedral with a portal depicting The Last Judgement and dazzling stained glass windows. It also boasts the tallest steeple in Switzerland.
6. Zytgloggeturn (Clock Tower) - Lays claim to being the oldest building in Bern, built in 1191 as a Zytgloggecity gate and given a makeover in 1530 with the addition of a monumental clock.
7. Schweizerisches Schulzenmuseum (Swiss Rifle Museum) - Traces the development of firearms since the early 19th century and relates how Swiss marksmanship has evolved since William Tell.

That's Entertainment
1. Belle Epoque - Relax in this cosy bar surrounded by art nouveau treasures.
2. Klotzlikeller - Those with a penchant for history should head of to this bar, located near the town hall and reckoned to be the oldest wine bar in Bern.
3. Lorenzini - Hip, cultural bar that is in a place of its own. Gastronomists will relish the changing menus that represent the specialities of different Italian regions.

Essential Info
ApartmentCurrency - The unit of currency is the Swiss Franc (SF) divided into 100 centimes. There are roughly 1.50 SF to the US dollar and the euro and 240 to the pound sterling.

Weather - Summers are often warm but winters are cold and damp. Highest temperatures average 25 degrees C in the months of July and August, reaching a low of 3 degrees C in December.

Airports - Belp Airport (9KM South of Bern). Take a bus from the airport to the train station for 14 SF or a taxi for about 35F.
