Introduction
An ancient Provencal
country-house forms the basis of this beautiful hotel near the historic
town of Avignon. Combining high standards of service and top facilities
- including swimming pool, tennis court, sauna and gym - the de Cassagne
is an excellent base from which to explore the famous local countryside
and its swathe of picturesque towns and villages.
Location
Just to the north of
Avignon, the place where seven Popes found themselves exiled during the
14th century. Most prominent among Avignon's many sights is the Palais
des Papes, a huge, rambling fortification that is also near the 12th century
cathedral. Le Pontet is about ten minutes drive away from Avignon and
is also within a short drive of Orange and its Roman ruins and the amazing
Roman aqueduct of Pont du Gard, traverses the River Gardon at a height
of 150 feet (45 metres).

The choice is wide, from
rooms by the swimming pool to rooms by the fragrant, tree-shaded garden
and three kinds of sumptuous suites, some complete with jacuzzi and private
terrace. Air-con, satellite TV, safe, mini-bar and hair-dryer are standard
throughout.
Restaurants
A traditional 'french carte' is available from 12am to 2pm and 7pm to
10pm. Tickle your tongue with delicacies such as escargots, canard à l'orange
then round off your feast with a classic souffle, fondant or tarte.

top chef Philippe Bouchet, food is of the highest quality at the de Cassagne,
whether served in the heavily beamed restaurant or the adjoining open-air
terrace, which features a century old plane tree. Local ingredients are
the norm, not least of which is the wonderful array of sea-food. Meanwhile,
the hotel's bar is suitably well stocked.
